The Comfort of a Classic Apple Crumble

There are desserts that impress, and then there are desserts that comfort. Apple crumble firmly belongs in the second category. It’s the kind of dish that fills the kitchen with the smell of butter and cinnamon, feels forgiving if you eyeball the measurements, and somehow tastes even better the next day.

Apple crumble doesn’t need perfection. It doesn’t need fancy apples or elaborate techniques. What it needs is good fruit, cold butter, and a hot oven. The apples soften into a jammy, lightly spiced filling while the crumble topping turns golden and crisp, creating that irresistible contrast between tender and crunchy.

This is my go-to apple crumble recipe — simple, adaptable, and endlessly reliable.

This is the kind that smells amazing and works with basically any apples you have.

Simple, comforting, and timeless — apple crumble is proof that the best desserts don’t need to be complicated. Sometimes all you need is fruit, butter, and a little patience while it bakes.

Ingredients

Filling:
  • 5 Apples
  • 2 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • cup Coconut Sugar
  • ½ tsp Cinnamon
  • ¼ cup butter unsalted
Topping:
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup coconut sugar
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup cold butter unsalted

Method

Instructions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

  3. Assemble the filling: Spread the apple mixture evenly into a baking dish.
  4. Make the crumble topping: In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Rub in the cold butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs with some larger chunks.
  5. Top and bake: Sprinkle the crumble evenly over the apples. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the topping is golden and the filling is bubbling at the edges.
  6. Cool slightly before serving.
Serving Suggestions
  1. Apple crumble is best served warm, ideally with: Vanilla ice cream or Hot custard

Notes

Optional additions: chopped walnuts or pecans
Why coconut sugar? Slightly lower glycemic index, less processed, contains trace minerals.
